25 Feb - Feast Your Eyes Sunday: Gaynor Kane Photography

Updated: Feb 29

Week 2: Improvisation

Featured photographer: Gaynor Kane

Welcome to Week 2 of our Spring Blog. Each week we will feature a handful of new creative works by artists, photographers, writers, poets, and song writers. Different days of the week highlight different creative forms: Feast Your Eyes Sundays (art, photography), Wordy Tuesday (fiction, flash, nonfiction), and Rhythm-Verse Thursday (poetry, song lyrics).

This week we're exploring the theme of 'Improvisation.' It's a deceptively simple skill – you have to know the rules to break the rules. Along with that it takes confidence, perspective, and most importantly, freedom. The freedom to think, feel, and transform the established and predictable into the new and unexpected.

In other words – it's all that jazz.

Our featured photographer's work was also included in our debut issue (Winter 2024), and we're proud to include more of her work here. She considers herself an amateur photographer, seeking to capture moments that would otherwise be lost. You'll find she has an eye for capturing the unusual in the mundane, inspiring the viewer to 'stop and look' as they go about the city and see through new eyes. Her work invites us to notice the unusual beauty of contrasts: a terrace house slowly reclaimed and remade by nature to provide a home for the wildlife that cities push to the brink; cobble stones forged in another age and bound to last for ages yet decorated by spilled confetti – providing a brief moment of joy destined to be washed away by rain.

What does it say about modern life that even our negligence and thoughtless little accidents can create unlikely beauty?
